Using Effective Small Talk to Improve Your Social Life
Starting a conversation can be tough. The main reason for this is finding somethings to talk about. When meeting new people or just starting a conversation with a total stranger will leave all of us all speechless. I want to show you a few good topics that are great for starting some small talk.
1. Weather- Talking about the weather is by far the best conversation topic. Everyone can relate to the weather around you since it effects us all. It’s the best to talk about weather when it is severe, such as high winds or icy or snowy conditions that can cause damage. You will notice that when their is severe weather like this, that everyone is talking about it. It’s interesting to us since we are directly effected by it. We are able to find commonalities easily with this subject. So if you see a downed tree over some powerlines, keep it in mind to use. When you run into someone, bring it up.
2. Traffic- When you run into a car wreck, it instantly grabs our attention. We want to know what happened and are completely amazed by the sole sight of it alone. They usually cause traffic to be backed up too. You can use this easily for some small talk with anyone. People love to see people hurt for some strange reason. It brings a smile to some of our faces just for fact that they were not the ones injured. So if you see a nasty wreck, keep it in mind, along with any details to add to it. Traffic jams are also a good subject so keep in mind. It can bring up things such as road construction and even other things that can cause it.
3. Sports- This one is mainly for guys, but can work for some girls too. Sports to a guy is like him being a kid in a candy store. Most guy’s eyes get big just from talking about football and baseball and other sports. If you are a big sports fan, then you have a great topic for starting conversations. Maybe you will see someone who has a team shirt on and you can assume that they like that team. Bring up the subject of their last game and ask them what they think of it.
4.Food- This is a good subject for most people since almost everyone loves food. You can range your subjects from restraunts to a new recipe that’s going around.
5.Movies- Their are alot of people out their that just love movies and it can make a great subject to start talking with. When their is a new hit movie out people tend to talk about it constantly. You can always bring it up to people and ask their opinion on it or if they have seen it yet. You can even bring up old movies that you just seen after a long time.
6. Video Games-This is mainly for guys as well. Their are alot of guys out their that are hardcore gamers, and if you know they are gamers, then it can be safe to bring up the subject of video games.
7.Babies-Women love babies. If you are talking to a girl, then bringing up little ones will make their eyes light up. Babies seem to be most women’s favorite subject next to shopping. So if you have kids of your own, or seen something cute or funny that a little kid did, then bring it up to the next girl you see.
8. Breaking news- When their is an interesting story on the news, keep it in mind. Reading the paper is a good resources for finding subjects to talk about, as with magazine articles.
9.Celebrities-Celebrities are known for drama because that is what they do for a living, and they love to bring it into their lives. They also make a great conversation starter for us. Most of it has to do with criticism, but it makes for good small talk. You’ll hear about it often on the radio, but you will also hear about it from reading headlines on celebritiy gossip magazines such as Globe, and People magazine. Browse the headlines when you are in grocery stores just to have something to talk about.
There are ultimately an enormous amount of things to talk about. The key is to bring up things that people will want to talk about as well. So if you know that they are interested in Cars, then bring up cars. If you know they enjoy Magic tricks, then talk about the magician you saw on TV last night. The key is to keep your eyes and ears open for topics and subjects to talk about. So good luck with making your small talk.
